Hello

I have taken on the role of club president for the next couple of years and would like to thank the past president, Ken Aitcheson for all his hard work where he and his committee achieved many of the goals they set. Unfortunately Ken has been prevented him from playing squash for the foreseeable future due to injury. I wish you all the best for the future Ken and hope to see you about the place at some stage.

With the club complex starting to show its age we have had our fair share of issues this year. Thankfully we are fortunate to have an experienced committee who have been there to make sure things get sorted. We appreciate your patience with those issues that have been resolved and those that are still being attended to.

With interclub well under way, I hope you are enjoying the season and putting in some good squash performances no matter what level you are at. We are fortunate to have some very talented and keen players in the club and we are keen to promote the social side of squash as well.

Be proud of the Otago Squash Club you are a member of and show the club spirit by hosting other club players in a way that you would want to be hosted yourself. This year we have club shirts available for the first time in a number of years, this is not only a way to build the club spirit but is also part of our annual fundraising efforts so please make sure you get one.

All the best for the remaining squash year. If you have anything you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Regards

Alan Goodman

Club President

Working Bee’s
The working bee’s orgainsed by the committee in March and July were a great success with the floors getting a good scrubbing. Thanks to all those who came down to pitch in, especially those who helped tidy the rest of the club. Please remember the club is a voluntary organisation and needs its members to pitch in when needed. If you have an issue you would like attending to, please let one of the committee members know or send in an email via the form on the website.

Booking System
During the first few months of the year experienced some major issues with the electronic booking system. The committee has worked hard to rectify these issues and we believe we have a handle on the system now. Instrumental to this has been the expertise supplied by Dave Cormack who has now officially been appointed as our ‘IT’ man. With Dave on the job we feel confident we can manage the system until it is necessary to look at replacing it.

Hot Water Cylinders
Some of you may have had unfortunate showering experiences over the past couple of months, bloody cold showers that is! The clubs hot water system was found to be much like the front wall of court two, falling to bits. The three cylinders have now been repaired and the hot water should be flowing again. Again, thank you for your patience and a big thank you to Mark Stephenson for his time and effort.

Heaters
With the installation of the heat pump in the lounge last year the existing wall heaters became obsolete. We have therefore relocated one of them (so far) into the ladies change rooms to keep the chill off over the winter months. The switch has a timer on it so to get it to work simply push the green button.

Car Park Security
It has been noted that the security light illumination the southern part of the clubs car park (that’s the gravel part) is very poor. The bushes along the south wall of the club have been identified as being part of the problem and will be trimmed accordingly. Hopefully this will shed more light on the situation, if not the committee will endeavour to find a satisfactory solution.

Our C Grade Mens Team
The only team to compete in this year's SuperChamps competition from our club was the Men's C grade team. Made up of mostly younger, up-and-coming players, the team played well and showed some great skills. In the end the Varsity team were too strong for both the Otago team and the team from Wanaka. Good luck to the Varsity guys.

Sponsorship
Do you know someone who might want to sponsor our club? We are looking for local business to sponsor the club by putting some signage up on the court walls and in front of court two. Committee member Craig Teviotdale is our Sponsorship organiser so if you have someone to suggest please let Craig know. Craig has also put together a document outlining the various sponsorship deals, so if you would like to know more ask him for a copy. Craig’s contact details are listed below.

Overdue Subs
Please, if you have yet to pay your annual subs make sure you get along on a Monday night and sort it out with the committee member on duty with a cheque or cash. If that doesn’t suit, you can download a copy of the membership form from the website which has the details to make a payment via internet banking.

Court 2 Repairs BACK TO TOP
For those that have played recently you will have noticed the front wall of court 2 has been repaired. This wall has been problematic for a number of years now and with the temporary measures failing the time had come to get it fixed properly. Unfortunately we couldn’t wait until the end of the season to get the repairs done so we arranged to do it during the Varsity holiday break to minimise the disruption. Thank you for your patience during the repairs, I think you’ll agree that it has been a success with the wall looking (and playing) fantastic.

Not only does court 2 have a new front wall but it has a new ceiling now also! Thanks to some good work by Norm Hinton and his volunteer maintenance team (Miles Rapley, Alan Goodman, Russell Hannagan, Mark Stephenson, Lincoln Coe, Dave Dewhirst, Mark Topless, Dave Cormack, Lindsay McLennan, John Willemson, Ashley McEwen, Brendon Darvill Jackson, Michael Andrews and David Lai) court 2 now sports a stunning new MDF ceiling that won’t drop bits and pieces of itself on you while you play! Thanks for the effort guys.
Club Champs - Please Note Date Change BACK TO TOP
This year’s Club Champs will be held from Tuesday 29 September to Thursday 1 October. This is a great chance to play some of your fellow club members in a competitive match to see where you stand.

The tournament is open to all members. Those who are interested but don’t have a grade please make sure you put your name down and we’ll sort out where to slot you in. Keep your eye out for the entry list on the notice board or email info@otagosquashclub.co.nz.

Entry fee is $10 with the club’s annual trophies to be presented after the finals on Thursday night. See you there!
D Grade and below tournament BACK TO TOP
Our two enthusiastic junior committee members Nick Askin and Cameron Wallace have decided the club needs to run a tournament with more of a social aspect to it. They have decided that a D grade and below tournament will be perfect with a focus on getting those who are ungraded involved.

The tournament will run from Friday 16 October to Saturday 18 October. While the boys have drummed up some sponsorship an entry fee of $10 will apply. There will be spot prizes and a raffle, and entries can be made to info@otagosquashclub.co.nz or on the notice board at the club.

Players from all clubs are welcome and there will be entry lists at selected clubs, so please pass on the news to all relevant players you meet.
Club Shirts BACK TO TOP
Club t-shirts are still available.

The t-shirts are made from dry-fit material and are available in a blue/gold or white/grey colour-way. They are available in both women’s and men’s styles and sizes. So make sure you show your club spirit on court and get yours today.

Cost - $25.00
(please remember this is a fund-raising exercise for the club also)
Otago Sports Depot BACK TO TOP
The Otago Sports Depot has been a great supporter of the club again this year, stepping up as the major sponsor of our two annual tournaments. So if you're thinking of buying a new racquet, shoes or gear make sure you get down to the Depot and talk to the guys there. They will give you excellent (and expert) advice on finding the right equipment for your game, you'd be amazed at the differences between the various frames and brands of racquets!

Special Member Discount – Brent has made an offer to all members for a 10% discount on all squash gear they have in store, so make sure you mention to him or the staff that you’re a member!
